Tonale road noise?

Hi!

Have someone measured Tonale’s road noise in 100kmh (65mph)? How is road noise compared to other same segment cars?

Edit: I tried better decibel app and it shows ~74db on 100kmh so it is pretty decent with fairly new studded winter tires. I think it will drop about 5db when changing to summer tires.

I measured with phone app and it shows 97db and i think that can’t be right because Giulia with all weather tires get ~70db in the same app. I have also read some reviews and they said that Tonales road noise is about 70db or less at 100kmh.

I have Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded tires and i think it might be the reason to the high road noise. I have also read that it is not the most quiet winter tire in the market. I have 18 inch wheels.

I didn't measured, but I consider it quite fine. Today on motorway I was driving 150-190kph and to be fair I was surprised how quiet it is for SUV body.

I was on a phone call once, the person said my car was too noisy...
I slowed down from 85mph to 65mph and said it was better for them to hear me, LOL!
I suppose the mic is not the best quality, surprised? No.

maybe version with glass roof? these add noise related to speed.
mics are basic, but overall quality of calls since giulia (so tonale), is good. problems were in older alfas/fiats - in my 159 I did a lot of experiments with different mics, and found ones which improved quality by a lot, but here is just stock fine IMHO.

Mine is definitely tire noise. It varies with changes in road surface. FWIW went with a friend to test drive a Kia Sportage. I was shocked at how quiet it was; tire noise was almost nonexistent. Maybe it's in the fender sound insulation. Does anyone know if the Tonale has the same fender liners as the Giulia?

I don't have a db meter but I know my Goodyear all seasons are loud. And I've been told the same by several passengers. @Adelaide is correct about manufacturers opting for subpar tires, especially on cheaper versions like my TI. I had the same Eagle Sports on a 2015 Acura TLX and had to replace them after 7000 miles due to the noise. FWIW the Kia Sportage my friend test drove had Michelins as OE. So apparently not all mfrs scrimp on their tires.

I'm not sure if I can agree Alfa Romeo does any savings on tires (posts seems to go this direction?). Can't say about US market where they use usually all season models, in Europe they use only premium summer tires. My Tonale came with Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy gen 5 stock which I think are one of quietest tires and good grip at dynamic riding (though I sold them before even used as I bought 2nd hand set with 20" with OEM Pirelli PZero which I asked to fit before car collection). From experience many Alfas I had, there was awyas Continental Sport, Brigdestone Potenza or other top installed. Noisewise they were either average or top. Right now I have Nexens winter tires (on original 19" rims) which are not top brand (top of mid class/bottom of premium more or less), and even they have more snow/mud oriented thread, at 190kph 2 days ago it was still quite comfortable in the cabin noisewise. Certainly in case of cars with glassroof I would look at this first. Or, it is maybe comparision with lower height car (although for me, it is first suv ever I own) which in the same time had quiet tires and/or was well road noise attenuated (alfa noise attenuation was always kind of average, never top - all was about something else).

I have also those same Goodyears at my 19inch summer wheels. So they were quiet to drive? I haven’t got opportunity to try them because i bought my car at winter time end of last year. I dont have a sunroof.

Goodyears eagle F1 assy gen x were always very quiet. I haven't tried them on Tonale since I put 20" Pirelli set immediatelly at car collection and later winter tires on 19", but I used for long time GY Eagle F1 assy gen 3 on my Alfa 159 Tbi based on recommendations of other users - these were best tires I ever had - quiet, instant grip even cold tires - were perfect for very dynamic in town driving, were brilliant at high speeds at motorways. I only din't buy gen 5 for my Giulia, as they have side wall shape rounded and o rim protection, and didn't look good - bought instead Michelins Pilot Sport 4S which have similar characteristics but look cooler on lowered sports sedan. Of course there is gen difference and size difference on GY Asyy G3 vs G5 used in Tonale, but I suspect main tire specs/charactersitics didn't changed that much?

-I find the Tonale too loud both with the factory 20x8's / factory Michelin tires, and also my 18x8's and Vredestein non-studded snow setup.

-Much louder than my previous vehicle. For me, it definitely is related to tire/road noise getting into the cabin. As on certain types of asphalt the car becomes absolutely quiet at highway speeds. When I get on this type of 'quiet' asphalt, I can hear the rear electric motor whine a little during acceleration, which I kind of like!

-My plan is to address the road noise this spring/summer. I've already purchased some Dynamat, some Boom Mat spray cans. I will start with the wheel well liners and wheel wells first and take db readings before and after. If there is no noticeable difference, I will try adding some material inside the car.

I tried other tonale with same size wheels and winter tires without studds and there was night and day difference. I think decibels dropped atleast 3-4db and steering felt also better. So i bought new tires without studds and going to instal them tomorrow. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10’s dont fit well with this car for sure :D But for the people’s who have Tonale’s with 20” wheels, it is normal to have a bit road noise because it is very big wheel size.

My thought was that the factory 20x8 wheels are about 33lbs. each, while the O.Z. 18x8's are about 19lbs. each.

The 18's have less mass, so maybe they can't damp noise as well. If the 18's were the typical 28-30lbs. per wheel maybe the extra mass could damp more sound? I'm not really noticing much of a
change is sound volume between the 20's and 18's. (Or my ears are broken :D )

Maybe haha but i bought Yokohama Ig60 tires and it so less noisy, you can talk normally and everybody hear you in car, even in higher speeds. Same decibel app shows about 68-69 db at 100kmh so it is massive improvement (maybe they get even more quieter when they got some miles on them). Tire noise depends how is the roads surface but generally here on Finland our roads are not very smooth :D Because asphalt not like very harsh winter conditions. With right tires you can make huge difference in any car!

I also dropped tyres pressure to 2,4 bar each, it also helped.

There are some tires that are made with "noise reduction technology".
For the 18", I see TireRack has Hankook Ion Evo, and Hankook Ventus sets.
For the 19", I see Pirelli's and a Kumho tire set.
For the 20"... good luck!

Author of the thread said later he used studded tires Nokian Hakkapelitta 10. Such tires can't be quiet IMHO. Such tires are not popular in Poland where I live (not sure even if non white-snow roads such could be used legally), but once I seen car passing nearby and it was very noisy while rolling - then I spotted studs in tires.
IMHO Tonale is quiet enough on regular tires - of course it is not luxury car to have plenty of damping materials, so of course some improvements could be don e.g. using alu-butyl damping mats, but I won't say there is any issue with road noise into cabin in this car - it is on normal industry standard for this class cars.

Yeah it was first time that I buy a car which have new studded winter tires. Now with the non studded Yokohamas car is pleasant to drive. I actually think it might be one of the quietest in this segment and also no wind noise at all. Let's see what it is like on 19 inch wheels with Goodyear summer tires on but I am assuming it won't get a lot noisier.
