2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale: The Brand's Smallest SUV Holds Promise

The European Tonale's suspension settings were also on the firm side of comfortable, even on generally smooth Italian roads. We drove cars fitted with passive dampers and the optional active dampers. The latter delivered crisper front-end responses, as well as a more compliant ride in their softer setting—the non-adjustable dampers were always stiff. In both cases, the cars we drove were riding on 20-inch wheels (the largest available)—smaller wheels likely would improve ride quality.

While the Tonale that comes to the U.S. will have a different engine and suspension tune, the basics seem positive—and the new car already feels like a higher-quality offering than either the Giulia or the Stelvio. Whether the U.S.-bound versions will be able to match the charisma of Alfa's existing lineup is still a question; the European hybrid powertrain certainly felt some way short of special.

The good news for now is that the Tonale manages the basics well. It looks great and it also feels much more solidly constructed than any of its predecessors. Based on our first turn in Italy the dynamics aren't quite there yet, but it is always going to be easier to tweak and tune suspension and powertrain settings than to fix the sort of egregious quality problems that Alfa used to bring as standard.

On first impressions it requires more polish if it is going to make an impression in this hard-fought part of the market, and more urge than the 48 Volt Hybrid can muster would be nice, too. While the 202kW all-wheel driven PHEV version isn't confirmed for Australia, it seems like the most obvious potential source of extra performance.

But the long wait for an excuse-free Alfa looks set to continue for a while longer.

Alfa will be at pains to point out that this Hybrid version of Alfa Romeo Tonale doesn’t have any direct competition from its premium rivals, because these are only available as pricier plug-in hybrids. And, when you factor in a good level of standard equipment, including LED matrix headlights, a hands-free electric tailgate and wireless phone charging, the Tonale should represent good value for money. It does also drives quite nicely for the class, with a ride that strikes a good balance between comfort and handling.
However, interior quality and space are a letdown compared with the Tonale's premium competition, and if you really want a hybrid with low emissions, good fuel economy and can live without the badge, you can choose from the much more spacious Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage hybrids.

My dealer who is a large Alfa Dealer told me they are not sure the Tonale will even come to the USA this whole thing with Alfa has been disappointing. The cars get good reviews in the magazines and appear to be good cars. But sales are poor they are only beating Fiat and Jaguar, and the Stelvio and Giuila remain two of the most heavily discounted vehicles on the market. The Tonale has been a fiasco it is late, Dodge not only came out with a copy but one that is priced 20% less and has a ICE engine and Alfa has announced that only hybrids will come to the US. Now my dealer thinks the car is not even coming to the US. Alfa needs to pack their bags again and go back home they have really stunk up the joint.

First critical review of top of line Tonale. The interior plastic quality vs an BMW X1/Audi Q3 doesn't surprise me, Benz plastics on low end aren't spectacular either. It's no secret most of us have an emotional connection with the car. We go into the purchase knowing the weak points already but those are made up for in spades with the Tonale's styling and that's the weak point of the others.

You cannot be serious re your message that Tonale may not be coming to America? My Alfa dealer in PA took my $1000 deposit about 6 weeks ago for a custom Veloce and has just provided a production date of mid-April and delivery in May. Lets see which dealer is correct (or you you just a troll?)...
