I only find it important when there are 3 people in the rear seat. In those scenarios, you tend to be rubbing bodies potentially with the person next to you so the grab handles help prevent your body from sliding into the person next to you. When it's my own car, I could care less as I'm driving, but when I'm being driven and are sandwiched with 2 other people on the rear seat that's when the grab handle matters.
