Production for the North American Tonale models has started at the Alfa Romeo plant in Naples. The wait is finally going to be over!

It's hard to believe, but the Alfa Romeo Tonale debuted over a year ago. Perhaps it's not so hard to believe for our friends in Europe, where Tonales are already road-tripping across the old continent. Meanwhile in the US, we're still waiting to sample this sharp compact crossover. Now that production is beginning for North America, that wait will soon be over.

Built at the Alfa Romeo plant in Naples, Italy, the Tonale is the automaker's first plug-in hybrid. It's also available in pure combustion format with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, but North America will only see the PHEV version. To refresh your memory, the powertrain pairs a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a single electric motor, producing a snappy 285 combined horsepower. All four wheels get power; the electric handles the rear while the engine manages the front. A six-speed automatic transmission changes gears, and for zero-emission operation, a 15.5-kWh battery offers a range of over 30 miles.

Very Good news. I read that Alfa has recalled laid off workers to have 2 shifts working on the Tonale/Hornet assembly lines. I hope they
don’t give priority to Hornets as they have
more orders for them. That would hurt the
Tonale orders.
Here is another article on this same announcement.

Alfa Romeo’s latest SUV finally has officially kicked off production.
Stellantis’ plant in Naples, Italy builds two small SUVs that U.S. buyers will be able to pick up — the Dodge Hornet and its platform mate, the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The company announced the latter has finally hit the serial production milestone Friday, with the Tonale’s next stop being dealers in several global markets including North America.
Over here, though, we’ll only be able to get the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale in one form: a 1.3-liter-backed plug-in hybrid. Overall, this small electrified SUV manages 285 horsepower — a respectable amount for the class — while the automaker promises more than 30 miles of all-electric driving capability from its 15.5-kWh battery. Those who choose to lease the Tonale can take advantage of a loophole in the Inflation Reduction Act to receive a $7,500 tax credit. Because it’s built overseas, folks who finance or buy the car outright will not be able to get the federal credit (but may still qualify for some state EV incentives).

2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale production

Pricing for the entry-level 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Sprint starts at $44,590, including a $1,595 destination charge. Two trims are available above the base model, as well: the $46,590 Ti and the $49,090 Veloce.

Yesterday we announced the official start of production for our PHEV Tonale. Tonale embodies all the Alfa Romeo DNA elements, Italy, Sportiness and Rosso. The spirit of Alfa Romeo runs deep in this car. Cannot wait for the first trucks to arrive at our amazing dealer network.

Still haven't got a VIN yet for my car. Prior to any customer orders, my dealer ordered 12 cars, of those 12 only 3 have VINS as of today.

My situation is the similar to yours.
When did you put in your order at the dealer?
Don't remember exact date off the top of my head, but it was a day or two after the pre-order went live on the Alfa website, so end of Jan, or 1st of Feb I believe. At that time, I think one, possibly two early go getters got their pre-order in before mine. Not sure what hold up is. I just hope we don't get our deliveries pushed back too much further. First it was May delivery, that seems improbable, so now I'm thinking July best case and August worst case.
They are waiting to send over 2,000 or more cars together in a RO/RO freighter. My guess
dealer delivery will be early June.

I learned from a Dodge dealer that until now they were not able to take pre-orders for the Hornet R/T
Hydrid which shares the same drivetrain with the Tonale. He said they expect Hybrid Hornets to be delivered 6 months from now, so it appears that Alfa is only making Tonales at the present time.
That is hopeful news we will get some here soon.
Called my salesperson and he confirmed production has already started on our Tonale. He should get the VIN in a few days which will allow us to get an insurance quote (State Farm). He said our car will be in the first batch delivered to the dealership in PA but no ETA beyond a vague late-May/June.

According to google search, there are 134 Alfa dealerships in USA, and 16 in Canada. So on average there will be ~13 Tonales available for each dealership soon.

I think I am under #10 in my dealership.

That’s great news. We appear to be in the home stretch. Be sure to give us an update when you get a VIN.

Not sure where you get number but looks high for only Tonale. May be it includes Hornets as well.

Early June is my expectation too though. If lucky late May.
The number was stated by my dealer as usual number of cars that they put on the RO/RO ships.

2,000 might also include Giulias and Stelvios. They are all coming out of the Port of Salerno.
